What is the IRS mileage rate for 2026?
▼
The IRS updated the 2026 mileage rate mid-year. Trips using the business mileage rate and taken after July 1, 2026 use 76 cents per mile. FuelMath applies the current rate automatically to every trip you log.
What counts as a deductible business trip?
▼
Any drive where the main purpose is business — client visits, job sites, errands, travel between work locations. Commuting from home to a regular office never counts. Work from home full-time? Drives to clients and job sites generally do qualify.
Does commuting count?
▼
No — commuting is never deductible on federal returns. Home to regular office is personal, no matter how far. But if home is your principal place of business, drives to clients or temporary locations do count.
Standard mileage rate vs. actual vehicle expenses — which is better?
▼
Pick one per vehicle per year — you can't mix them. The standard rate ($0.725/mi) is simpler and usually worth more, since it bundles gas, depreciation, maintenance, and insurance into one number. Actual expenses mean tracking every receipt all year — FuelMath's expense tab does that if you go that route.
